Achieving Influency* Through Long Tail Marketing and Search Modeling

Arizona: Pregnancy and Abortion Perception is NOT Reality

The last time I wrote a Labor Day piece was three years ago. Here’s another, but this business change isn’t about labor unions or holidays; today’s topic is the kind of labor women go into before they give birth.

And lawmakers’ propensity to waste time and money when given half a chance.

The other night, one of my sons turned me on to this story in the Huffington Post. In it, Arianna’s crew talks, among other things, about the fact that in Arizona pregnancy will soon be defined as having commenced two weeks before the act that caused the pregnancy to occur.

Partner, or Target?

Sales to Small Business is Different than selling to Large Business

It’s a small business change that can control your success selling to small businesses. For that matter, it can effect your success with large businesses, too.

Target, or Partner?

I was speaking with a client yesterday. One of the things we handle for him is sales. We prospect for him peripherally, but specifically we do his “closing”; prospects come in, and we uncover needs and decide what to sell them. We do that for his existing clients on the upsell side of things, too.

Patents, Business Change, and AT&T Redefine Net Neutrality

In the aftermath of last week’s Samsung/Apple legal debacle over patents (you can bet I’ll have something to say about that, soon), I’ve been thinking about another topic that pops up here, every now and again. Hello, AT&T? This is Net Neutrality calling, and we want our definition back.

Homeless, and Looking for Internet

If anything positive can be attributed to the terrible loss I experienced last month, I’ve found myself reconnected to people I had long ago lost track of. Cousins who live pretty nearby. Less-direct relatives. Friends of friends.

I’ve also connected with some people who my sister knew, but because I was just a kid when I knew of them I was only peripherally attached to. I’ve been in close touch with one of those people, and he feels like a real bridge between Barbara and me—and it seems I’m serving in a similar manner for him.

All Hubspot, All The Time—Where I Don’t ‘Mea Culpa’ Hubspot

Last week, I wrote about Hubspot, their upcoming price changes, and how, several years after I started paying attention to the now-partially-Google-owned marketing tool, Content Management System (CMS), and Content Farm, I’m still finding Hubspot’s business model disturbing.

Mike Volpe, Hubspot’s Chief Marketing Officer, didn’t care for that piece, and said so, here. And I issued a partial “mea culpa“; according to Mr. Volpe, Hubspot has never raised their prices for existing customers. Mike, I hear you, and now I’m repeating what you said: Hubspot is still letting old customers pay old prices; through several rounds of Hubspot price increases and service model changes, Hubspot is still charging four-year-old customers four-year-old prices. Got it.

Hubspot Changes Prices, Changes Again. Customers Are Screwed

Hubspot is Changing Their Prices ... Again

Hubspot Pricing

Ah, Hubspot. Are you really that determined to destroy the already-questionable value of your CMS, long tail marketing and search engine optimization offering?

I’m not happy to be writing about Hubspot this morning. Hubspot’s been on my radar for a while, and I’ve told you about them several times. I think there’s a place in the world for Hubspot, even though I also believe that Hubspot’s value equation just hasn’t ever added up.

It’s The Best TV Ever! (Except It’s Pointless)

Soon, LG will start selling a TV that shows four times more pixels than any other television. 1920×1080? Garbage. How does 3840×2160 grab you?

Never mind that the new LG “4G” TV will cost $22,000 when it launches, or that you almost certainly don’t have a wall in your home where the massive 84″ television will fit and make sense. We get it; LG’s new 4G top-of-the-line beast is for rich people, and nobody else.

Censorship and Microsoft SkyDrive

This young lady is sitting on her back in my Microsoft SkyDrive Account. As you’ve probably guessed, she’s wearing nothing.

And if you can find the full version of her picture (taken this morning from the front page of sex.com), you’ll see a lot more of her. In fact, “what-is-pornography” debates notwithstanding, I’m pretty sure that the image I’ve buried in SkyDrive would be viewed in most places, by most people, as “obscene” (butt-covering disclaimer: others would see it as “art”).

Humble Bundle and Games Marketing

One of the most amazing and beautiful things about business change is that there’s no “right way” to do it. There are plenty of wrong ways, like, say, underpaying your employees or cutting back on customer service, but your options for positive change are limited only by your ability to think creatively.

What’s So Social About Social Media ?

Although I don’t consider myself a journalist, nor in most cases is Answer Guy Central what I believe most people consider to be a “news source”, one of the habits I share with publishers is that I keep a close eye on what people read here. You can see part of what I see at the right of this page (or at the bottom on a mobile device) where we show you what’s been most popular recently as well as over the last year.

Internet Timelines Aren’t The Same As Real Time

I’ve been out of touch for a couple of weeks. As you might know, I lost my sister on July 31, and this last little while has been the most difficult time of my life.

I write here about five times each week, almost without fail. The last time I took a few days off, I told you that properly constructed long tail marketing and search engine optimization had actually caused traffic in my absence to rise a bit. This time around, the same thing happened; our traffic since the beginning of this month has grown.

Rest in Peace, Dr. Barbara Yablon Maida

Rest Well, Doctor Barbara Yablon Maida

Doctor Barbara Yablon Maida, 1956-2012. Rest in Peace

I lost my sister this week.

I have no Jeff-like snark or pith to lean back on. My sister was the best, kindest, nicest, smartest, and most insightful person I’ve ever known. I’m a little bit shocked that I’m posting this here, but the world has changed.

I know I still think that tweeting from the altar is ridiculous, period. I worry about a world where family fun on video is so fraught with peril. But as I’ve been putting together a bunch of stuff that I couldn’t imagine having to contend with just a couple of days ago I’ve also thought a bunch about how things have changed.
