Smart Wi-Fi Toggler: An App Design Business Change That Works

This piece might sound like a commercial  It’s not. We haven’t ever accepted advertising at Answer Guy Central, and while we have occasionally featured affiliate links here, such as our Amazon link for Tim Ferriss’ books, there’s zero recompense today for what might sound like a paid advertisement.

Ready? If you use an Android phone, go download Smart WiFi Toggler, Right Now.

I’m not actually all that excited about what Smart Wifi Toggler seems to do, because as one of the stragglers still on Verizon’s unlimited data plan for my mobile phone, conserving bandwidth isn’t a problem I need to face. And let me be clear that there are other Apps that do even more management of your mobile device’s radio connections, sometimes with pretty great effect.

Everything You Need To Know About Everything (Not!)

Marketing, Search Engine Optimization, Business Change, and Influency*

As smart as I’ve convinced me I am, at the end of the day I’m insignificant.

The picture above says it all. Each of us is lost in a much larger world, and when it comes right down to it any business owner knows that his or her goal is to get just a little bit bigger, to stand out.

There’s a lot of irony in there. From believing that Virgin America Customer Service might care what I think, to my musings on new forms of computing devices like the Google Chromebook, to my comments about über statistician Nate Silver, the fact that I believe I can make a difference when I’m so small is pretty funny. But try I do, every day.

It All Comes Down To Marketing (Why Can’t Sally Negotiate?)

Equal Pay? Marketing and Negotiation Matter

If you know me, or read my words here with any regularity, you know that I tend to say what’s on my mind. Political Correctness leaves me cold, and I truly believe that we’ve become far too genteel a society—or at least spend too much time pretending we have.

By “we” I mostly mean Americans. But I also mean “internet users”, which probably sounds funny since the Internet often feels like way too much of the opposite. People say whatever pops into their heads, and the level of public vitriol is sometimes so high it’s hard to imagine how the ‘net keeps running at all.

Election Day Stats, Search Engine Optimization, Nate Silver

Four more years. Whether you’re happy about that business change or not, four more years of President Barack Obama is now a fact. You’ll adapt, because it’s what makes you a business person.

You also have proof that Search Engine Optimization works. And we have some new traffic to Answer Guy Central. A big thank you to Nate Silver and his Election Day Statistics.

Election Day Statistics and Search Engine Optimization

This is our “current” popular traffic. This information is constantly changing, and what shows up here is a reflection of the most popular articles at Answer Guy Central over the previous 15 days. You’ll see that #9 on the list is the article I wrote yesterday about Statistics, Election Day, Nate Silver, and Journalistic Integrity.

Nate Silver Statistics and Android Journalism

Nate Silver, Android (And Journalistic Statistics)

Is Nate Silver an Android?

I’d actually enjoy knowing if the most famous statistician in the world uses an iPhone or an Android device (gotta believe it’s Android). Today being Election Day in the USA, I’m at a cross-roads where I ask myself a lot of questions, and here’s the business change message du jour:

You have to be an Android to like Nate Silver.

But not “Android” as in the operating system I choose for my SmartPhones and tablets. I’m talking ‘Android’ as in an actual, not-quite-human machine. Someone who loves facts so much he stops caring about the things that facts effect.

Business Change, Browsers, Desktops, and Google Chromebook

The Google Chromebook 'Desktop'

I’d like to introduce you to Reggy. She is, as you can see, very likely the cutest dog ever. And it’s a good thing she is, because Reggy is the desktop on my shiny new Google Chromebook computer, and I can’t cover her up with icons.

Operating System Market Share October 2012

As I watch New York City attempt to recover from Hurricane Sandy and think about business change, I’m more aware than ever about perception and reality. The most difficult challenge I’ve had to overcome this week is the lack of fresh bread in my neighborhood. I’m grateful, and walking around the Upper East Side of Manhattan I’ve run into quite a few people who “get it” better than I might have guessed. I’m grateful for that, too.

Google/Apple/Nokia: The Reason Software Patents Are Such a Bad Idea

When Google released it few months ago, I wrote a piece on the Nexus 7 that focused on how it had been crippled.

I love my Nexus 7. I use it all the time, and I’ve since figured out how to circumvent Google’s attempts to keep the Nexus 7 from acting as a voice device. But I’ve continued to wonder why Google went out of their way to make the Nexus 7 less than it could be.

Looks Like the iPhone 5 Lightning Adapter is BIG Apple Evil

Just when I was feeling all warm and fuzzy about Apple . . .

So by now you’ve heard all the opinions on Apple’s iPhone 5. Maybe you’re one of the several million people who’s already bought one. Maybe you don’t care about the fact that the iPhone 5 isn’t really all that much of a jump from the iPhone 4S, and excitedly bought one anyway (tools, toys . . . ).

Maybe you live in the UK, and so you’re relieved that Apple is making a Lightning-to-USB converter available for the iPhone 5, despite its ridiculous price.

The Long Tail of The Google Nexus 7

Nexus 7, Music and Wifi: Computers Are Hard (Still!)

This week, my Verizon Wireless-tethered Galaxy Nexus SmartPhone finally received the Jelly Bean update to Android version 4.1. Despite having a small increment in its version number, Android 4.1 makes a huge difference in the way the Galaxy Nexus runs.

. . . SNORE . . .

Despite that first paragraph being short and containing a simple, focused message, it’s likely that I chased a few people away. It’s geeky, right?

Well, no, not really.

Amazon is the new Apple . . . But May Be Better at It

Here Comes Business Change

I have a habit of pointing out things that I think are bad. It can sound really negative, and I often fail to move forward by pointing out what the positives are from seeing and acting on—or against—these things I notice.

We’re going to start changing that, right here, right now.

Yesterday, Amazon.com Chairman and CEO Jeff Bezos unveiled a new line of eReaders/PDAs/Tablets that might just take over the world. I’m not convinced yet, and I’m still happy with my decision to buy the Google Nexus 7 a couple of months ago, but I’ll tell you this: the new Kindle Fire is a game changer.

So Many Svbtle Self-Promotional Tools, So Little Time

Publish or Perish: Long Tail Marketing

A couple of years ago, I asked whether the world has too many blogs. My answer now, as it was then, is that if you think a huge number of people are hanging on your every word and can’t wait for you to publish whatever is on your mind, you’re likely deluding yourself.

On the other hand, if you realize that the old saw about “publish or perish” that was once true for professors has become true for most businesses, then you need to blog. Blogging will get you traffic. Traffic is good (read: long tail marketing).

News Not Written About: Google Has Dumbed Down The Nexus 7

Nexus 7 Lock Screen At First Boot

I’ve got me a Google/Asus Nexus 7 Tablet (yep, I’m so excited that I’m going with “I’ve got me . . . “). I ordered it right before the pre-order period ended, and it arrived a bit under a week later. And it’s as cool as all the many, many reviews of the Nexus 7 say it is; the Nexus 7 is an absolutely amazing tablet computer, doing way more stuff for $200 than any device I’ve seen.

Want a link to go away? Pay Up. Is this ‘Extortion’?

As I’ve promised you in this piece on the legal silliness between Apple, Google, and Samsung—and others—my spin on the reality of the Google Nexus 7 is on its way. I think you’ll like it; what I have to say about the Nexus 7 and business change casts Google’s new tablet in a very different light that you’ve seen anywhere else and I believe will give you a perspective you’ll really be able to use.
