The $24 Smile from Apple’s iPhone 5

apple's iphone5 lightning to micro usb adapter europe.jpg

See this smile? It’s Apple making $100 million in ancillary revenue, all while staying on the right side of European lawmakers.

In Europe, where all SmartPhones are mandated to have the same MicroUSB connector that so many phones in the States and elsewhere have, Apple had a problem on its hands with the new iPhone 5. Turns out that any exemption Apple had for the existing plug on all iDevices stretching back to the very first iPod went out the window when Apple redesigned the plug on the iPhone 5.

So Now That Siri Has Been Around for A While . . .

I know a thing or two about Virtual Assistants. Virtual VIP helps our clients get stuff done. I’ll stop short of saying “whatever you need done, we do for you”, but it’s close.

Apple’s Siri, despite what you might have seen on television commercials, is not a Virtual Assistant. In fact, forget what Samuel L. Jackson and Zoey Deschanel have to say on the subject, most people will find that interactions with Siri go more like this one (NSFW):

The Siri Rock God Commercial, Reimagined

Apple’s Siri Can Run on Any SmartPhone, Any Computer

You’ve seen those commercials, right? People with the latest version of the iPhone just speak and things magically happen, courtesy of the very cool (I’m not kidding; it is very cool) Siri Virtual Assistant software built into the iPhone 4S.

Apple, when asked if Siri would be coming to earlier versions of the iPhone, said it couldn’t be done; the newest iPhone is so more powerful than even its most recent predecessor that Siri won’t run on it—or won’t run in a way that’s up to Apple’s performance standards.

Google Worries. (Siri on iPhone 4S NOT a Virtual Assistant)

Any second now, Apple’s iPhone 4S is going to be “real”. October 14 is the official launch date for the latest version of iPhone, and once it’s “out” people will be walking around talking to their phones, giving us all something new to be frustrated by and driving a new wedge between manners and technology.

As I told you when Steve Jobs left us last week, I’m actually considering moving from my nearly-two-year old Droid to an iPhone. And I like Android. A lot. And my issues with Apple are huge. The new iPhone is that good.

TouchPad Proved iPad a Toy. Now Android Proves it for iPhone

When they killed the TouchPad, Hewlett Packard proved Apple’s iPad to be just a toy. Now a new study suggests that the iPhone is very much the same thing. In the world of SmartPhones, Android devices are tools, while iPhones are toys.

Google To Reign In Android Fragmentation—Maybe

I’ve been an Android user since Verizon, Motorola, and Google got together and released the original Droid. While my SmartPhone has begun feeling slow and bloated as it’s aged and I’ve added app after app to my mobile arsenal of tools, I love my Droid, and I’m a real Android fan.

The problem with Android, though, is that there are too many versions of the operating system in use. Android comes pre-installed on SmartPhones, and while the geeky among us can make changes, the version you get from your carrier is what you’re stuck with.

Stealing Movies, Jailbreaking SmartPhones Now Legal

We have a legal system in the USA that’s meant to ensure nobody gets railroaded by a single party with an agenda to fulfill. And while the Internal Revenue Service gets to act as judge, jury, and executioner, most everything that doesn’t involve taxes takes the cooperation of many parties to resolve.

I have a new fear of respect for the Library of Congress.

The folks who previously started archiving the entire stream of drivel scrolling through Twitter have ruled (umm . . . overridden law) that certain portions of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act just  don’t count. What was illegal is now . . . not

Apple iPhone OS 4.0: A Beginning, or Beginning of the End?

Business Change is a odd thing. We all know we have to be constantly changing our businesses to adapt to … well, changing business … but should business change be active or passive? Proactive or reactive?

And is it ever a good idea to anger your suppliers?

Apple has announced the next generation of operating system software for the iPhone. OS 4.0 will bring the iPhone more or less to parity with what’s developed over the last couple of years for Google’s Android operating system and made popular on devices like the Droid, and make no mistake: Apple had to address the problems in iPhone OS. So hooray for Jobs & Company; Steve has shown that he understands that arrogantly pushing forth into the places he says are “right” all the time isn’t a viable long-term strategy.

Business Changes in Phone Apps? Not at Mobile World Congress

This week in Barcelona, Spain a conference called Mobile World Congress is happening. The attendees are employees of some of the world’s biggest and most influential companies: AT&T, Apple Computer, Motorola, Google, Microsoft.

Their goal? To consolidate the market for the software that runs on SmartPhones. Summing it up if you’re from Apple, you might say: “there’s an app for that, but only if you use an iPhone”.

So let’s see: Apple, the undisputed leader in the SmartPhone market (but losing share quickly to Android), would like everyone’s software to run on everyone else’s phones? And Microsoft, who have released yet another version of their phone software, is looking to be cooperative with their competitors?

Why More People Don’t Use an iPhone

Simple: Because They Don’t Get It.

I’m not about to go off on a the-iPhone-is-the-best-thing-since-sliced-bread rant. In fact, let me state, right here, right now, for the record, that I am not a user, and on my last birthday was offered one as a gift and just couldn’t do it. I TRIED, by the way. I went to an AT&T Store, explained to a very nice associate that I needed to be left alone to play with one, was set up to do so, spent nearly an hour, and walked away hating the iPhone.
