Nothing is Free—Except Maybe Google (But Not Really)

Google. Monopolies. Free Service Gone Paid, Business Change

Nothing is Free. Nothing. Is. Free. NOTHING IS EVER FREE.

You knew that, right?

I’ve been sharing my ideas about business change with you for years, and one of the themes that’s recurred over and over is that Google—even if somewhere deep in their bowels they still believe in their old corporate ‘Don’t Be Evil‘ credo—has become and will continue to become more and more evil.

Of course, business is business; ‘evil’ no more belongs in a business lexicon than ‘justice’ belongs in a discussion about law.

A Free App That Tells You All You Need To Know About Design

Smart Wi-Fi Toggler: An App Design Business Change That Works

This piece might sound like a commercial  It’s not. We haven’t ever accepted advertising at Answer Guy Central, and while we have occasionally featured affiliate links here, such as our Amazon link for Tim Ferriss’ books, there’s zero recompense today for what might sound like a paid advertisement.

Ready? If you use an Android phone, go download Smart WiFi Toggler, Right Now.

I’m not actually all that excited about what Smart Wifi Toggler seems to do, because as one of the stragglers still on Verizon’s unlimited data plan for my mobile phone, conserving bandwidth isn’t a problem I need to face. And let me be clear that there are other Apps that do even more management of your mobile device’s radio connections, sometimes with pretty great effect.

From AAA to ByeByeBye: How SpringPad Made Me Throw Them Away

One of the earliest pieces I wrote here and filed under “business change” was this one about changes made to password manager software SplashID. And while many of the thoughts I pass along are instructional from a cautionary tale/think twice perspective, it’s rare that I out and out say “Holy Cow, You Just Screwed Me And So Now  I’m Done Using Or Recommending Your Product”.

I stayed with SpalshID for a while after that piece was written, but the die was cast and I pretty well knew it had been. SpringPad’s just done something so heinous, there will be no second chances.

Pulse, Flipboard, Android, Journalism, and Business Change

Pulse For Android Vs. Flipboard For Android

Flipboard is the future of journalism. Here’s how I know that’s true: I’ve just installed the Flipboard App on my Galaxy Nexus SmartPhone, hate it, and I’m still going to be using it.

The journalism wars are over. The bad guys have won. Go Home.

Flipboard, long a staple on iDevices, isn’t even supposed to be available for Android. It’s part of the pre-installed software package on the just-announced Samsung Galaxy S III, and was supposed to be an exclusive on that not-yet-available device for some months. But Flipboard for Android has leaked and is easily available.

Facebook, Instagram, Business Change, and Fish Stock(s)

Yeah. Fish Stock.

If you think about it, Facebook is kind of a fish story, right? “I once caught a fish THIS BIG“. Yesterday, an even more unbelievable story unfolded in business change land, as Facebook spent . . . I can hardly even type this without retching a little bit . . . $1 BILLION (yes, one billion dollars) to buy an App. One App. One single, simple, been-copied-to-death-and-does-nothing-unique App.

Big Changes Happen . . . Right At This Site

What the heck have we done to Answer Guy Central?

Unless you’ve never visited us before, you’re rubbing your eyes right now, wondering what happened to the design of this web site. What happened to that simple design and the handful of buttons?

Well, we drink our own Kool-Aid, and today we’ve rolled out a business change that doesn’t make me completely happy, but was the right choice. Relax, Jeff . . . relax . . . relax . . .

SmartPhones, Apps, Power Consumption, and Customer Service

Despite the fact that my Galaxy Nexus SmartPhone has a screen resolution that rivals desktop computers, there are some things that all those pixels just don’t represent very well. For example, here’s Answer Guy Central as seen on the Galaxy Nexus:

full answer guy central on a smartphone, with no app

Looks just like it does on a full monitor, but it’s too small to read comfortably. And yes, you could zoom in and out and make it an acceptable experience, but that’s clumsy—or, an unacceptable experience.

A couple of years ago, we created Android and iPhone Apps so readers wouldn’t have to deal with that. Here’s Answer Guy Central for iPhones:

Android Screen Capture Redux: Why It Can Be Done, But Hasn’t

Android Screen Capture and Android Screen Grab

I’m throwing down the gauntlet: if you’re an Android Developer, I challenge you to build a screen-capture App that will work on Android SmartPhones that aren’t rooted. Build it, and I’ll buy it from you.

Or better yet, build it and let’s make a fortune together.

One of the most-commented posts here at Answer Guy Central is one I wrote over a year ago about Android Screen Capture (and the HTC Sense Interface). As with many of the things I write here that post was designed to get you thinking about business change and business process.

Linking, Framing, and Other Not-So-Dull Copyright Issues

If imitation really is the sincerest form of flattery, the Internet is the most flattering place in the world.

It’s not just the bad SEO being practiced by folks like JC Penney’s Search Engine Optimization consultant. We talk about SEO a lot here at Answer Guy Central, and we believe we do Search Engine Optimization in a clean, legitimate way. Scraping, Content Farm tricks, and the like aren’t clean.

Neither is framing someone else’s content and passing it off as your own. That practice isn’t even an SEO trick; with the proliferation of mobile computing via Apps on SmartPhones, iPads, and other tablets, framing content has become an easy way to make money.
