Achieving Influency* Through Long Tail Marketing and Search Modeling

Tag Archives: google analytics

Does SEO Matter? Yes. Why? Because Google Can’t Count.

I was excited when Google announced the new real-time feature in Google Analytics. My excitement lasted only a few seconds. Once I was granted access to the new version of Google’s traffic-counting software, that’s how long it took to see that Google Analytics, although more useful with each added feature and traffic measurement metric, is less “accurate” every day.

Now Google Lets You Decide What’s Important When You Search

About a year ago I told you that Google had rendered their web site measurement tool Google Analytics worthless. It’s not strictly true; Google Analytics provides a lot of great information about your web site. But because anyone can have their computer put up a big “don’t count me!” sign, what Google Analytics doesn’t do is count all your web site visitors or all the pages that they visit.

As Google continues to struggle with which sites deserve high ranking in the search engine optimization wars, tweaking their results in ways that we can all only hope turn out OK, the real outcome remains in question.

A couple of months ago, word leaked out that Google was about to make it so that you could opt out of Google Analytics.

I pointed out at the time that Google allowing people to have their browsers instruct the web sites they were visiting to ignore their visits renders Google Analytics worthless. Yesterday, Google flipped the switch. It’s now easy to instruct Google Analytics to ignore you when you surf.

Google Analytics Has Now Rendered Itself Worthless

How do you know if your web site is performing?

If it makes more money than it costs, maybe that’s good enough. Even without doing any measurements of traffic, click-through rates, or your Search Engine Optimization ranking, you can tell that much. But what if you need to know more?

The answer, of course, is you use a tool to measure your traffic. Google Analytics is Google’s free tool for measuring web traffic, and it just keeps getting better and better; so much so that there’s plenty of questioning of why you would use a paid service to measure web site traffic and performance.
