Achieving Influency* Through Long Tail Marketing and Search Modeling

LinkedIn Amps Up Recommendations. Pay Attention . . .

This morning, I opened up LinkedIn to look at my profile.

Actually, that was “step two”. I received a message from LinkedIn this morning telling me that someone I used to work with had endorsed me as an expert in Lead Generation. I was surprised that this had happened and clicked through to LinkedIn to investigate. When I got to LinkedIn, I found this:

LinkedIn Ramps Up The Friends Recommendations

It’s an attractive presentation, and in it LinkedIn is making it very easy to do what is being quite clearly illustrated. Endorse/recommend the people you know as experts in the fields for which they claim expertise. It’s a no-brainer!

Friends and Enemies on LinkedIn, Other Social Networks

Linked In Connection with a Verizon Marketing Executive

Last week, I received a connection request from someone I used to work with. This guy was a couple of levels above me during my stint at Verizon Communications, and frankly, we didn’t have a great relationship.

In fact, when I was offered a very big promotion elsewhere in the company, this guy went out of his way to squash it, effectively ending my short career at Big Red. Things have worked out just fine, but I’ve never thought very highly of this person.

And then last week, he asked to connect with me on LinkedIn. Call it what it is: I was shocked.

“What IS Privacy?”, Part 2: Germany May Have The Answer

I’ve written about privacy a few times, and while my opinions are pretty well formed, the question rages on. What IS Privacy? What privacy do you have a “right” to, or what level of privacy can you “expect”?

With so much information finding its way onto the Internet, I’ve taken a pragmatic approach: nothing is private. Don’t expect privacy. Period. Laws are nearly meaningless. And court rulings mean even less.

Germany is considering a law that I don’t believe can be enforced, but at least sounds good. If passed, the new German law will make it illegal to use “private” data when looking for information about prospective employees.

Is Business Change All Business? Is Social Networking Altruistic?

OK, year-end business change tidbit: And it’s more than a mouthful . . .

Business isn’t always an easy sport. I often say there’s very little about business that any reasonably intelligent person can’t figure out, but when it comes time to mix it up, roll it into a ball, and turn out a delicious piece of bread, things get . . . sticky.

So as we enter a new year, my question for you is: What is your Social Networking Strategy?

How Do You Manage Social Networking Sites? Posterous. Or … Not

How’s Social Networking treating you?

It’s amazing, right? A click here, a snippet there, and all of a sudden the whole world knows you. Business Change is a dream. It’s easy!

It isn’t at all. Now that you’re on Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, and wherever else, maybe writing a blog, and who knows what else, you’ve discovered how much work it is to maintain them all and keep them aligned. Wouldn’t it be great if there was a good way to post something once and have it show up everywhere?

LinkedIn Recommendations . . . Yes or No ?

So I’m reading the thoughts of Jeremiah Owyang, of Forrester Research.

The question comes up: Are LinkedIn Recommendations worth anything?

Jeremiah says “no”, pretty much, but then softened his stance when he responded to my post here.

What do you think? Is the World Wide Web a Way Wacky Wilderness that’s made us all something less than recommendation-worthy?
