With all of the recent news about Search Engine Optimization, you could almost forget that the thing we did here before these dang intertubes took over our lives was Computer Care. This week, someone noticed a how-to-be-a-pedophile book for sale on Amazon.com. It had been there for a while, and not very many copies were selling. Then, the Internet happened.

As soon as the existence of that book (and Amazon’s willingness to sell it) started getting around, its sales rank shot up in a big way. I presume that was the result of curiosity taking over, and not an indication that there are tens of thousands of would-be pedophiles lacking the intelligence to find their tools without help from others. ... Copy Machines: Finding the Line Between Panic and Practice

Yesterday I received an email from my sister. She had come across this video from CBS News:

The point of the story is simple: almost every copy machine in service today has a hard drive in it, and every copy that gets made gets saved to that hard drive. This means that when you take personal documents to a copy center to reproduce them you’re leaving a copy behind, and it also means (for example) that when your personal information is used in completely normal and legal ways at insurance companies they are leaving copies behind unless they take steps to do something about it. ...
