So Now That Siri Has Been Around for A While . . .

I know a thing or two about Virtual Assistants. Virtual VIP helps our clients get stuff done. I’ll stop short of saying “whatever you need done, we do for you”, but it’s close.

Apple’s Siri, despite what you might have seen on television commercials, is not a Virtual Assistant. In fact, forget what Samuel L. Jackson and Zoey Deschanel have to say on the subject, most people will find that interactions with Siri go more like this one (NSFW):

The Siri Rock God Commercial, Reimagined

Data and Bandwidth Usage, Perception, Reality and Siri

When I told you about Google Music and the immense amount of bandwidth it consumes, I never thought that something so innocuous could actually trump that kind of media streaming and cost you more.

Hello, Siri.

Although I’ve been writing about Apple’s “virtual assistant” since way back in May 2010, (and I know a bit about Virtual Assistants), one thing I hadn’t thought about is just how much data software like Siri goes through in working its magic. Turns out, quite a bit. Or depending on your view of perception and reality, not all that much.

Apple’s Siri Can Run on Any SmartPhone, Any Computer

You’ve seen those commercials, right? People with the latest version of the iPhone just speak and things magically happen, courtesy of the very cool (I’m not kidding; it is very cool) Siri Virtual Assistant software built into the iPhone 4S.

Apple, when asked if Siri would be coming to earlier versions of the iPhone, said it couldn’t be done; the newest iPhone is so more powerful than even its most recent predecessor that Siri won’t run on it—or won’t run in a way that’s up to Apple’s performance standards.

Google Worries. (Siri on iPhone 4S NOT a Virtual Assistant)

Any second now, Apple’s iPhone 4S is going to be “real”. October 14 is the official launch date for the latest version of iPhone, and once it’s “out” people will be walking around talking to their phones, giving us all something new to be frustrated by and driving a new wedge between manners and technology.

As I told you when Steve Jobs left us last week, I’m actually considering moving from my nearly-two-year old Droid to an iPhone. And I like Android. A lot. And my issues with Apple are huge. The new iPhone is that good.

A New Market Develops: What IS a Virtual Assistant, Apple?

A couple of weeks ago, Apple bought Siri, a company that has developed “virtual assistant” software for the iPhone. Being familiar with both Siri and the virtual assistant market, when I heard about this I . . . shrugged.

A virtual assistant helps you get things done. Most frequently that means you hand off the tasks you don’t have time or expertise for to another person, or in the case of us here at Virtual VIP, another company.
