Journalists Tweet, But They Still Don’t Care What YOU Think

David Pogue doesn’t care what you think.

Actually, that’s false. Pogue, tech columnist for the New York Times and ever-more-omnipresent TV guy, does care what you, his readers, think. And he’s constantly asking via his account on Twitter. But according to a new study by the Pew Research Center published at journalism.org, he’s very much in the minority.

Say More By Saying Less: Tweet Your Email!

Yeah, I went there.

In a world where our communications are getting less and less personal, shorter and shorter, and have been distilled down to a constant stream of all-but-meaningless chatter, I’ve just suggested that the best way to get someone’s attention may be to say . . . less.

The advice isn’t completely out of left field. “Less is More” is an old axiom that we too often forget, instead prattling on because we think that by spitting out as many words as possible we’ll eventually say something that matters. It can work, but I’m reminded of my time at Verizon Communications.

No One Cares About Your Tweets? Now Do It Anyway . . .

So it turns out that nobody cares what you say on Twitter.

OK, so that isn’t true. But if you’ve been wondering why the more influential people you follow never retweet (RT) your words, the answer is simple: they don’t do that. You’re not surprised, right? The more “important” you are, the less incentive you have to care about the people you know peripherally. Ever been to a book signing and see how little real connection is in the eyes of an author signing copies of his latest masterpiece?

Not Tweeting Will Get You Arrested. NOW Do You Like Twitter?

Did you know a policeman can order you to Tweet, and If you refuse you can be arrested?

Got your attention, didn’t I? It’s true; at an event promoting the actions of one of the latest teen sensations, the crowd got out of control. One of the people responsible for the event was asked to use Twitter to help reign in the hysteria, and failed to do so. Result? Stainless Steel Bracelets.

Speaking from my not-a-lawyer-or-a-police-officer-or-government-official position, I’m trying to wrap my arms around this, and having a hard time.
