So I hear that Facebook‘s been on the fritz this week. Like, a lot. I haven’t noticed. Not because I don’t use it; I’m just saying it’s worked for me. And full disclosure: if Facebook wigged out for a whole week for me, I’d be annoyed.
Not surprisingly, many, many people have been screaming/whining/whatever about how Facebook being out of commission is costing them (something). OK, true enough. If your tool doesn’t work you want to do something about it. And if that tool’s under warranty you bring it back to the store where you bought it or ship it back to the company you bought it from and get a replacement. If not, you buy a new one. That’s business change, isn’t it?
Here’s a question: how much did you pay for your Facebook account? Oh, right; you didn’t pay anything; Facebook is free.
So imagine my surprise when no less an outlet than CNET publishes an article taking the position that Facebook OWES its users better service and greater responsiveness.
Facebook OWES you this?
Listen, I’m right in the front of the line advocating that entities like Facebook do the right thing, but . . . for THEM, not us!
I’m all for being nice, by the way . . . almost to a fault. But the reason Facebook needs to communicate better is because it will eventually support their business model, unlike the arrogant stance they take on almost everything now. It is NOT because they owe us anything.
Facebook is FREE. They owe you nothing.
What do you owe your clients? I’m guessing you don’t ask that question often enough. And while even Facebook needs to start asking that question, their size gives them a huge cushion protecting them against business destruction if they fail to do so.
Can you say the same?

Hi Jeff.
Thanks so much for your terrific Newsletter. I always love your insight and adding a new twist to an mundane idea. Keep them coming. My site will be up hopefully by the end of the week.
Very exhausted ! If I only knew it was a year and a half process !
Thanks for the kind words, Colette!
Creating something from scratch is always harder than it looks, and I’m really happy to hear you’re getting close!
Let me know when you’re ready for us to start working together, and . . . I’m there!
