At Home Depot, a Touch of Black-Hat SEO with Your New Hammer

Science, Philosophy, and Search Engine Optimization

And like a puff of smoke, Home Depot’s Web Site is all but invisible in Google.

Last year, JC Penney found themselves penalized by Google. Penney’s Search Engine Optimization had become too aggressive, and the search giant slapped JCP on the wrist. Now, it’s happened to Home Depot.

The subject of what Google allows and what’s considered grounds for penalty is one that fascinates me, both because my mind loves puzzles like this one and because The Answer Guy does Search Engine Optimization. And Home Depot did something last week that falls right into puzzle territory. They asked contractors to link to the Home Depot web site, which isn’t actually forbidden, but then suggested that the contractors could hide the links, which is.

How Search Engine Optimization Works (Exceptions Prove Rules)

This morning I received a piece of SPAM that made me think of how difficult it can be to take SEO seriously if you aren’t a Search Engine Optimization Consultant, yourself. I’ve mentioned the SEO credibility issue before, alluding to a friend who alternately refers to Search Engine Optimization as Multiple-Level-Marketing (MLM) and Snake Oil.

And despite being an SEO Consultant, and getting consistently great results for our Search Engine Optimization clients, I understand why SEO is so hard to take seriously. First, the very fact that you can make Google’s search results change sounds fishy. And second, speaking mathematically there’s a pretty obvious disconnect between the number of sites seeking high enough SEO results to make their investment make sense and the number of high-results slots available. SEO can’t possibly really work, right?

New Rules, New World . . . It’s ALL about Change

Sometimes, I can just point to someone else’s work, step back, and tell you how great it is.

This is almost one of those times. Check out this article in Wired.

Aside from my concern with the author’s statement that you should leave your WiFi connection open to the public, pretty much everything here makes sense. And seriously, in a Blog about Change, this article is fun, on-message, and . . . well, just great!

So if I send you all to that article, add a comment or three, and step back, have I changed your life? If you weren’t gonna see it otherwise, you bet.
