Evil Is Everywhere: Zagat Now Free. Google Now Paid.

Last September, Google bought the Zagat review guides from Tim and Nina Zagat. I told you than that Zagat is the best of the review guides, fixing the Internet’s fake reviews problem because of the way their data gets crunched.

I also told you that Zagat would find its way into Google quickly. I was off by a few months; while I figured that Zagat or at least part of it would become free before the end of 2011, Google has just now turned on the free version of Zagat.

Google: So Dominant in Data, They No Longer Care About Data

When Google decided this week to shut down Google Labs, people who analyze these things scratched their heads, and then mostly opined that Google was shuttering Labs to concentrate on core business opportunities.

True enough. But then something else happened that brought into focus where that core is: Google is Killing the Google Toolbar.

This isn’t really that big a deal when viewed in its own right. As Google points out, quite a bit of what’s “in” the Google Toolbar is handled directly by browsers; in many ways the Google Toolbar has become redundant.

Senator: “OK Some TV Isn’t Free. But … Not the Olympics!”

How can US Senators be so unclear about the meaning of the laws they write?

Today Senator Herb Kohl of Wisconsin, who not coincidentally chairs the antitrust subcommittee of the Senate Judiciary Committee, asked NBC to explain why certain Olympic events, available on NBCOlympics.com, can only be viewed there after you prove you have a subscription to a pay-TV service.

Really?

Let’s see:

  • NBC’s ownership of paid-only television channels to augment their over-the-air broadcast stations was approved by the United States Congress. Congress didn’t think approving that was antitrust
