When—If Ever—Can You Trust Google?

Can You Trust Google?

In Google, we trust. A few days ago, though, Google did something that has to call into question whether the search and advertising behemoth is trustworthy. Trust Google? That’s getting harder.

Let me be clear that I’m talking about some very specific stuff here. I still think my decision to start using a Chromebook was a good one, and I feel the same way about my Nexus 7 tablet. And despite Google’s continued tweaking of the way they do search and what it means to your privacy, I’m OK letting the Google pipe stay open all the time in all my devices.

Google’s Latest Play for Monopolistic Business: File Formats

Google and World Domination via File Formats

Quite a few years ago, I ran into Deb Triant, who at the time was President of Adobe. We spoke for about thirty minutes, and embarrassing as this is, I didn’t know how highly placed a person I was speaking with when I shared—emphatically—my opinion that Adobe needed to make the .PDF file format an open standard, else see it become unimportant. Ms. Triant laughed at that suggestion; in the early days of PDF Adobe charged not just for the tools to create the files but also for the software people needed to read them.

The Simplicity of World Domination (Google Owns Everything)

Back in the day, when I spent a lot of time being The Computer Answer Guy, I built my street cred giving a little talk about how you couldn’t go wrong being full-on into all things Microsoft. I’m no longer inclined to throw my mind and soul into the goings on of the folks in Redmond, and have gone so far as to suggest that Microsoft is becoming irrelevant.

This despite Microsoft’s inroads in areas like . . . batteries. ;-)

Be Afraid: Google’s Rules for Search Are About To Change

Time to dredge up that old “Is Google a Monopoly?” issue again.

I don’t like this topic, because as a free-enterprise guy and a keen observer of Google and how they do business I’m mostly inclined to scoff at the idea that Google is a monopoly. The argument usually comes down to whether the definition of monopoly skews toward its literal meaning or one that’s more metaphorical; at 65-70% of search traffic, isn’t “a monopoly” the de facto reality of what Google has become?

The Newest Edition of Monopoly: All Google, All the Time

Maybe it’s time for a Google version of Monopoly.

Monopoly Board Game Google Edition

It will play exactly like every other version of Monopoly, and after a few rounds and a couple of laughs you’ll wonder what the fuss was about. You know, kind of like the sideshow that went on in The United States Senate this week, as the question of whether Google is a Monopoly began receiving its day in front of legislators who can’t agree on the meaning of the word.
