Achieving Influency* Through Long Tail Marketing and Search Modeling

Plastics, Benjamin, Plastics (Or, for Great SEO, Pictures)

Benjamin Braddock learns about plastics in ‘The Graduate’. And you learn about search engine optimization and long tail marketing

If The Graduate was made today, ‘Plastics, Benjamin, Plastics’ wouldn’t matter. Today, the best advice a middle-aged guy can offer a recent graduate is “long tail marketing and search engine optimization, son, long tail marketing and search engine optimization”.

Of course, that wouldn’t make a very good line in a movie.

I have an SEO secret for you today. It will change and supercharge your Search Engine Optimization in a huge way. For real. I discovered it this morning, and it’s absolutely incontrovertible at least until Google changes the game. Here it is:

The Long Tail of The Google Nexus 7

Nexus 7, Music and Wifi: Computers Are Hard (Still!)

This week, my Verizon Wireless-tethered Galaxy Nexus SmartPhone finally received the Jelly Bean update to Android version 4.1. Despite having a small increment in its version number, Android 4.1 makes a huge difference in the way the Galaxy Nexus runs.

. . . SNORE . . .

Despite that first paragraph being short and containing a simple, focused message, it’s likely that I chased a few people away. It’s geeky, right?

Well, no, not really.

Twitter and Google Agree on Something, But . . . What?

This morning, I happened to flip on “Good Morning America”. Like many people, I’ve given up on TV News, but I stumbled across ABC’s produced-by-the-news-division-but-felt-like-a-gossip-program vehicle and stuck around long enough to see the repeated entreaties by GMA’s on-air staff that everyone Tweet using the hashtag #TeamRobin. Robin Roberts is a host on GMA, and this morning she’s undergoing a bone marrow transplant. Good luck, Robin, and a speedy recovery!

Publish or Perish: Long Tail Marketing

A couple of years ago, I asked whether the world has too many blogs. My answer now, as it was then, is that if you think a huge number of people are hanging on your every word and can’t wait for you to publish whatever is on your mind, you’re likely deluding yourself.

On the other hand, if you realize that the old saw about “publish or perish” that was once true for professors has become true for most businesses, then you need to blog. Blogging will get you traffic. Traffic is good (read: long tail marketing).

Which: Search Engine Optimization? Marketing? Adwords? YES!

Search Engine Optimization for St. Louis Search Design

On the Internet, where everyone can hear you scream, your screams will only be loud enough if Google thinks they should be. This is where Search Engine Optimization and Search Engine Marketing come in.

What’s a marketer to do?

Aside from the obvious (contact The Answer Guy About Search Engine Optimization), the answer starts with understanding the difference between SEO and SEM. Search Engine Optimization is when you get Google to find you organically in search terms, and Search Engine Marketing is when you buy placement, such as through Google using Adwords.

What Happens When SEO Gets You Traffic On Your Own Name?

search engine optimization click-through rate chart

Yesterday, while doing analysis for one of our larger SEO clients, we came across what you see above. My apologies for blurring out the keywords, but showing them would compromise both our client’s identity and potentially the value of the work we do for them.

Take a look at line three. Over the course of a month, 3,000 inquiries were made on what happens to be the client’s company name. As you can see, their web site was ranked by Google, on average, at just over position #2 for search engine optimization purposes on that name. Fully two-thirds of all people who searched for their name both found and clicked through to their web site. That’s the good news.

Black Hat Guys Go UnGoogled (Who Ya Gonna Call? SEO Busters)

I enjoy telling you about Search Engine Optimization. As I’ve mentioned before, part of the reason for that is that we sell SEO Consulting and Search Engine Optimization services, but I also like it because SEO presents the kinds of puzzle that I like trying to solve.

I try to be transparent about both my enthusiasm for SEO and the way we do Search Engine Optimization at Answer Guy Central, so much so that we show you a bunch of our SEO Results—which I’ve been told is rare. And when Google took issue with a test we did on a new SEO technique a couple of years back, I even showed you that.

The Music Business, Customer Service, and Kool Aid

Sometimes the best way to see where you’re going is to look back at where you’ve been. As a big proponent of drinking your own Kool-Aid, I was thinking back on some of the things I write about frequently, and what I’m passionate about.

We have three major themes here; Customer Service, Search Engine Optimization, and most broadly, Business Change. All of those are general enough that I have a lot of fodder to pull from; especially on that business change topic, finding things to write about is rarely a struggle for me. But some themes keep showing up.

The Simplicity of World Domination (Google Owns Everything)

Back in the day, when I spent a lot of time being The Computer Answer Guy, I built my street cred giving a little talk about how you couldn’t go wrong being full-on into all things Microsoft. I’m no longer inclined to throw my mind and soul into the goings on of the folks in Redmond, and have gone so far as to suggest that Microsoft is becoming irrelevant.

This despite Microsoft’s inroads in areas like . . . batteries. ;-)

At Home Depot, a Touch of Black-Hat SEO with Your New Hammer

Science, Philosophy, and Search Engine Optimization

And like a puff of smoke, Home Depot’s Web Site is all but invisible in Google.

Last year, JC Penney found themselves penalized by Google. Penney’s Search Engine Optimization had become too aggressive, and the search giant slapped JCP on the wrist. Now, it’s happened to Home Depot.

The subject of what Google allows and what’s considered grounds for penalty is one that fascinates me, both because my mind loves puzzles like this one and because The Answer Guy does Search Engine Optimization. And Home Depot did something last week that falls right into puzzle territory. They asked contractors to link to the Home Depot web site, which isn’t actually forbidden, but then suggested that the contractors could hide the links, which is.

Guns N’ Roses’ Axl Rose: A Huge Jackass, But a Great Client

Axl Rose, Jackass

Axl Rose is my favorite SEO client. Or the Guns N’ Roses front-man would be my favorite client if we were doing his Search Engine Optimization.

I’ve mentioned Mr. Rose before. I wrote a whole post about the idea of Axl Rose as a business change agent about a year ago, and then a few days later showed off our SEO skills with this post about Axl Rose, Mick Jagger, and The Grateful Dead. Take a look: our SEO Rankings were pretty impressive.

Blogging, Search Engine Optimization, and Blogging ABOUT SEO

Yesterday I came across this piece on do-it-yourself Search Engine Optimization at ReadWriteWeb—or more specifically at ReadWriteStart, an offshoot of ReadWriteWeb aimed at getting things done for the small business person. I’ve quoted ReadWriteWeb quite a few times here; it’s one of those started as just a blog but has graduated to the world of “real journalism” web sites that’s managed its business change by hiring former real-world journalists, including my old pal David Strom.

That paragraph had way more information than one paragraph normally should. I talked about journalism, blogging, SEO, business change, and the fortunes of an old friend—all in 76 words. Yikes!

Google Finally Reveals Their Secret Sauce … Or Starts To.

Barring an act of God, or at least the United States Congress, Google is never going to reveal how they decide what matters to them. Of course, for those of us selling Search Engine Optimization services, that’s a good thing; you need us if you want your business to rank in Google.

But SEO is a funny thing. We get results; we always get results; but we can’t guarantee SEO results because search engine optimization is ultimately art as much as it’s science.

Search Engine Optimization Laid Bare: Look At These Numbers

A couple of years ago, Microsoft admitted that they didn’t understand long tail marketing. They also said that long tail marketing is important; it was an uncharacteristic admission of incompetence from the folks in Redmond.

I’ve been telling you about the importance of long tail marketing for quite some time. Today, I’m going to open up the curtain on some details of how long tail marketing works that you wouldn’t expect to see a search engine optimization company reveal unless you paid them for the information.

Dilbert Gets SEO, He Hates It, and Why That Matters

Dilbert's Pointy-Haired Boss and Search Engine Optimization

Dilbert hates Search Engine Optimization. Dilbert’s pointy-haired boss, on the other hand, loves SEO. Or Scott Adams has a commentary on just how ugly a game Search Engine Optimization is.

Me? SEO is what I do. Contact me, and I’ll get your website ranked higher by Google. Yes, I’m that pantless weasel (and Google thinks this page should rank for pantless weasel, too).
